Over the course of his illustrious career, Virgil Abloh produced no shortage of joint efforts with the Swoosh, some of which were only viewable at the designer’s “Figures of Speech” exhibit. The Futura x Off-White x Nike Dunk Low — which was teased several times since 2019 — was originally thought to be equally mythical, though rumor had it that the collaboration would be releasing to the public in honor of the late designer’s birthday. As it turns out, this information was quite a few months off, as a total of eight pairs are set to go up for auction via Sotheby’s this April. “The ‘Virgil Abloh™ x Futura Laboratories’ Dunks were so special to Virgil, not only for their role as an anchor piece of the SS20 collection, but as a symbol of collaboration and creativity, two principles he always prioritized.” Shannon Abloh states. “The Dunks represent Virgil’s unique lens on art and culture, and this auction with Sotheby’s further aids in keeping his legacy alive.” First previewed at Paris Fashion Week four years ago, the Futura x Off-White x Nike Dunk Low was a highlight of the Off-White Spring/Summer ’20 show, complementing a series of garments also customized by the revered artist. Prepared in two different styles, the collaboration tells two very distinct color stories: on one end, the shoes pays homage to the iconic “Be True To Your School” pack, referencing the famed Tar Heels signature; opposite, the pair tells of Futura’s passion for the New York Mets, all the while nodding to the Nike SB Dunk Low “Danny Supa.” “It’s amazing to finally see the ‘Virgil Abloh™ x Futura Laboratories’ arriving in this fashion,” Futura comments. “I hope to honor my friendship with Virgil and our creative collaborative work.
